Monthly Report (Oct. 2013 - Apr. 2014)

"And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ."
Ephesians 4:11-12 (ESV)

GROWTH AND NEW CHALLENGES

We have entered the Lord’s pasture to proclaim the Gospel, to build discipleship and to establish churches in Southeast Asia. Sarah and I began this mission one year ago in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I have chosen Chiang Mai as the ground for our mission field after receiving a vision based on the passage in Ezekiel 47, in which the Lord has instructed me to travel to the east.

In the year 2011, I have gone to survey this pasture in Thailand and had the opportunity to visit the Friendship Church in Chiang Mai. The church was a fairly new establishment comprised mostly of young adults and university students. There were also a couple of newlyweds.

In the past, several pastors have taken the leadership role for this church. However, all of them decided to leave the church after ministering for only a brief time period. This is due to the fact that the church was unable to financially support its pastors. Most of the members were and still are students with no incomes; hence, they were not able to financially support a full time pastor.

Since then I began to take interest in this small church and spent many months in prayers. Briefly after my initial visit, the church had invited me to come back to minister to the church as a missionary and a pastor.

However, after my wife and I made the decision to return to Thailand as missionaries to the Friendship Church, we have learned that the church had already found a pastor. Even then, we decided to remain with the church and ministered to the members just as we have promised the Lord.

After a short while we have noticed some leadership conflicts. I continued to pray and asked the Lord why these conflicts occurred when He had called us to serve and minister to this church. It seemed as though the power of darkness had overshadowed the work within the church and tried to hinder our ministry. At this time the Lord was quiet and I did not receive any answer to my prayers. Thus, I began to doubt.

Concurrently, we began holding a new cell group at our rental home. We gathered another group of young people to study the scripture and pray together. Those who attended this cell group were people that did not want to become members of the Friendship Church. They wanted us to establish a new church for them. However, I was still uncertain about this request.

The Lord led me through a period of fervent prayers and fasting in which I was in a constant spiritual warfare with the surrounding evil spirits. Nine months later, He answered my prayer. The pastor at that time decided to resign his position in order to further his studies. The Friendship Church then invited me to become the volunteered pastor of the church. I agreed to the position wholeheartedly since I have been praying for this congregation even prior to moving to Thailand. I began my official duty as a pastor by introducing and creating a church council to oversee the church. Then my wife and I began our work of sharing the Gospel.

We began to spend more time with the young church members and developed close relationships. We often gathered together to study the Word, worship and pray. Sometimes we would gather at the church while other times we would go offsite, such as at the parks or at our home. The members enjoyed visiting us at home where we would cook them hearty meals or we would go to the park together for a group picnic. We use these times to listen to their life issues and to encourage them to grow in Christ. These opportunities allowed us to pinpoint their common life issues. As we grow closer to them, many began to reveal more of their pasts and personal issues.

I began to spend more time praying for each of the members. I prayed for the Lord to heal them from their sorrows, pain and bitterness. Many of the members began to receive healing from the Lord. They started to understand the message behind the Gospel and their lives were slowly transformed. As they grow spiritually, they became more eager to serve the Lord within the church.

Our relationships with the young church members had grew so close that they started calling us “Teacher Dad” and “Teacher Mom”. Hence, we nicknamed the Friendship Church, “The Friendship Family”. Many of the church members left their homes to come study in the big city and we subsequently became their adoptive parents. The church cared for one another as if we were one big family.

"And let us consider how to stir up one another to live and good work works, not neglecting to meet together, as in the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near"
Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV)

Although the church members started to grow in their Christian faith and were more eager to serve the Lord, challenges also began to arise. Our greatest challenges are retaining the current church members and ministering to a group size that is in constant fluctuation. There is also a high turnover rate due to the nature of many them being university students.

Specifically, we tend to lose the members who are in their final years of study as they would eventually move away to find jobs after graduation. In addition, our numbers would drop drastically during the summer months when the students leave the city to go back home or to find jobs.

This is the new reality that I have observed as I began to change my prayer topics. I have also looked into new strategies to implement within the Friendship Church. Firstly, I’ve began to focus my ministry towards the newlyweds and the working young adults, in addition to the students. I hope to build the working class members into the core members of the church. At the same time I also hope to continue to minister to the students so that they may still be trained to lead and serve wherever they decide to go after their studies.

It is necessary to gather and build this new generation into a core church within the city. I hope to build this church into the mother church. If it’s God’s will I also hope to slowly expand this ministry into the surrounding area and establish daughter churches.

During my time in Chiang Mai, several church leaders from other parts of Thailand, Laos and Vietnam travelled to visit me in Chiang Mai. Many of these churches do not have permanent fulltime or trained pastors. The church leaders of these churches have asked me to help create leadership training programs/conferences so that they can be better equipped to lead their home churches.  They sought to have better foundations for leadership training, discipleship building, and Gospel sharing so that they can better evangelize in their surrounding areas.

I planned to hold a leadership training conference for these church leaders on July 21-24, 2014 in Chiang Mai. The main title of the conferene is “The True Gospel Message”. Presently, there will be 10 church leader attendees: 4 from Thailand, 2 from Laos, and 4 from Vietnam. I hope to raise $650 for this conference. As you read through this report, I hope that God will give you the burden to continue to pray for this ministry as well as the upcoming conference. I believe that the Lord will continue to bless His ministry.

Sincerely,

Rev. Dan Yang

UPDATES AND HIGHLIGHTS AT THE FRIENDSHIP CHURCH

DORMITORY PROJECT
We started housing a male dormitory which is located across the church building. At the beginning, we only have three male students. However, in the upcoming educational year, three more students applied to stay at the dormitory. We are hopeful that there will be an increase in numbers shortly.  Please pray for the dormitory project. We also hope to soon establish a female dormitory in the near future.

PHAYAO BIBLE COLLEGE
We had the opportunity to visit our spiritual sons who are studying at the Bible college. We continued to mentor, encourage and pray for their training and service for the Lord. Please keep our sponsored students in your prayers.

VISIT FROM KENYA (NOV. 14, 2013)
God had sent Bishop Henry Mulandi and Lloyd from Kenya came to visit us in Chiang Mai. They came to observe the Southeast Asia Ministry and gave us an encouragement in the Lord.  After Bishop Mulandi left, Lloyd remained with us for three more weeks.  He was very helpful in Bible and English teaching for the young church members.  Lloyd is also interested in coming back to serve at the Friendship Church.  We are praying for him if it is God’s will to bring him back to Thailand.

CHRISTMAS 2013
During the Christmas time, we had good opportunities to do open-air evangelism in three Hmong villages in Northern Thailand.  Many were interested in knowing more about the Lord Jesus Christ and some also came to accept the Lord Jesus as their personal Saviour.  We believe that church planting will take place in many places; however, we lack workers to help nurture their spiritual lives.  Please pray for us to have more budget, resources, and man power to support the evangelism ministry.

MISSION CONFERENCE (FEB. 8-21, 2014)
Sarah and I had an opportunity to attend Evangelism Training Camp and the 18th Missionary Convention in South Korea.  At the camp, we have learned about Team Ministry and the strategies of evangelism in the specific field. We also met a lot of friends and gained new experiences.  At the Missionary Convention, we have learned the theme, “One Heart, Whole Heart and Continuation”. I have also adapted this theme for this year’s vision for the Friendship Church.
It was exciting and interesting to learn of new strategies for serving and proclaiming the Gospel in the field.  We especially were thankful for the Mission Church (South Korea) and our good Korean friends who sincerely welcomed us and gave us warm hospitality.  May the Lord bless them abundantly!
