Monthly Report (June-October 2013)

"But my God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus." -Philippians 4:19 (KJV)

There and Back Again...

During the past few months I have been preoccupied with many life events that I did not get a chance to sit and write my monthly reports for the work in Southeast Asia. After my father has passed away in April, I have been grieving for several months. This was quite a hard time for Sarah and I as we also have to deal with the new life transition in Thailand, particularly the way of life, the climate, and most of all, being very far away from our children.

During this time, we dearly missed our children and our friends as well as our warm and comfortable home in Canada. However, the Lord continued to remind me to stand firm in His promise that “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the Gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life” (Mark 10:29-30 NIV). I have faith that the Lord has especially called Sarah and I for this mission and we trust that the Lord Jesus will bless us according to his promise.

This year, our children took turn to come visit and see our mission work in Thailand. They came to see us one at a time as they could not book for the same time off from work. Firstly, in the month of May, our daughter, Nancy, came to visit us in Chiang Mai and stayed with us for three weeks. During this time we were still grieving for my late father. Nancy was able to spend some time praying with us and examine our mission work. She helped us planned and brainstormed for many of our mission projects, particularly the Mission Day.

Our daughter, Nancy, came to see us in Chiang Mai (May 2013)

Sarah and I have an opportunity to return to Canada in the months June and July. Coming back to Canada was a lovely getaway as we reconnected with our friends and shared our experiences with them. During this time, we were also able to visit several churches, include Grace Lao Mennonite Church, First Hmong Mennonite Church, Thai Christian Church of Canada and Korean Covenant Church. Most importantly, these churches helped us with the success of our 2nd Mission Day, which was held on June 13, 2013. (You can read about Mission Day on our previous blog post or Click Here)

We are back at our lovely home for two months in Kitchener, ON (May 2013)

At Mission Day, I had a chance to share my vision and the ten projects that we planned to carry out in Thailand. (For more information about the projects, please refer to the Mission Projects booklet). We were thankful for those who came to listen to our testimony and supported our mission work. Many thanks also go to our brothers and sisters in both Canada and South Korea who have been praying and supporting us for the past year.

We spent these two months reunited with our family and friends. It was a blessing to share our experiences with them and at the same time received encouragement to continue our mission work. The time passed by quickly and we soon found ourselves packing and getting ready to go back to God’s mission field. We said our farewell and once again flew back to Thailand.

The Work in Chiang Mai and Beyond

Fortunately this time our son, Peter, accompanied us back to Thailand at the beginning of July. He came to stay with us in Chiang Mai for three weeks. We spent this time showing him our mission work in Thailand. Peter was able to help us with purchasing large household items and furniture for our rental house and office. He also gave us advice and encouraged us with our ministry. We were able to pray with him and we felt encouraged that our children continue to support us in our mission field.

Our son, Peter, came to visit us in Thailand (July 2013)

After saying goodbye to our son, we continued to focus on our ten mission projects that we have shared at Mission Day. We began with working full time at the Friendship Church, since the current pastor has resigned in order to continue his studies. I was invited to become the full time pastor for the students and the young couples at the church. Here I continued teaching them about the True Gospel Message. Currently, we have finished the first part of the message and are preparing to move on to the next part. At the Friendship Church, Sarah and I are working to reorganize and restructure the church from scratch once again.

Also, we have begun our next project, which is to establish a male student dormitory beside the Friendship Church. Currently, there are two male students who are residing at this dormitory. Presently, the dormitory is simply an empty space. The students are sleeping on the bare floor since there is no furniture. We pray that God will help us find funding so we can purchase simple furniture for the students, which include bunk beds, desks, and chairs.

At the dormitory we have begun a weekly Bible study every Wednesday for these students and the church members. We are also planning to accept more students for the upcoming new school term. We believe that there will be more students coming. If it is God’s will, we pray that we can also establish a female dormitory for the female students in the near future. Our hope is that we will have the opportunity to build this group of young people to become Jesus’ disciples and the future church leaders.

There was a mixed group of Christian and non-Christian Hmong people that came to see us in Chiang Mai. They encouraged us to start a new church for them in the city. We spent many months praying and have started a prayer and Bible study group at our house on Sunday from 3-6 PM. Currently, there are three young ladies and a family of seven who are interested in attending our Bible study at home. We believe that this group will grow and will eventually be able to become a church in the future.

In the meantime, we have also collaborated with different churches and Christian organizations, particularly, God Bless Thailand (Chiang Mai) to plan for evangelism conferences in Chiang Mai. There are two upcoming conferences: Pray and Evangelize for the People in Chiang Mai (November 1, 2013) and Abundant Life Festival with Franklin Graham (November 22-24, 2013). We believe that the Lord will soon bring revival to Thailand, especially Chiang Mai. Please pray for these two upcoming conferences. Pray that the Holy Spirit will touch those who will be attending.

Moreover, the Lord has opened doors for us to build a team of church planters for Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. I have encouraged my younger brother, who is a pastor, to plant a new church in Pattaya City, in the province of Chonburi, Thailand. We have encouraged and prayed for his ministry and currently he has about 15-20 members attending service every Sunday.

Also, we are sponsoring two Hmong Laotian students who are currently studying at Payao Bible College. We have found funding for their scholarships and have been praying for their studies. We continued to visit them and have invited them to stay at our house, where we spend time encouraging and challenging them to plant churches in their home country. We hope that once they complete their studies they will be skillful leaders for God’s kingdom, especially in Laos.

Journey into Vietnam and Laos

From September 20th to October 1st, 2013, Sarah and I were invited to be the guest speakers for a leadership conference in a Bible college in Hanoi, Vietnam. We thanked the Lord for giving us this opportunity to go explore Vietnam for the first time. The organization paid for my flight while our children helped paid for Sarah’s flight to Vietnam.

At the leadership conference, the attendants were church leaders from approximately twenty churches. These leaders came from churches with members ranging from 200-300 members. We had the opportunity to teach, encourage, and challenge the church leaders to go out and serve the Lord with all their strength.

After the conference, we ventured out (on motorcycles) to visit a rural Hmong village in Lau Cai, Sa Pa, which was located north of Vietnam. We stayed at the village for two nights. During our stay, we saw that these villages were fervently hungry for the Gospel. They begged us to share and teach them ceaselessly.

We secretly shared and taught them the Gospel Message the whole day and night in a confined space, so that we would not alarm the authority. They were drawn to the message that we shared and hunger for more. It was unfortunate that we were only able to reach out to just one village due to time constraint. There were many other villages nearby that are also waiting to hear about the Gospel. Hence, we decided to select two leaders in the village and prayed for them. We encouraged and challenged them to go out and share the Gospel, making disciples, planting churches, and training leaders in other villages. Please keep these two leaders in your prayers.

Praying for freedom and healing

From September 9th13th, Hmong church leaders from the region Saiya Buri in Laos invited us to visit them at Na Ngern Village. After spending much time in prayer, we thank the Lord for opening this door for us to visit, testify and share God’s message in Laos. It was a blessing that the Lord had open many hearts to receive Jesus. Many also received freedom from the bondage of Satan and healing. This was our second time traveling to Laos. We see that church planting and leadership building are urgent works that are on top of our priorities. We are continuing to pray for God’s hands at work in these areas.

The Lord Will Supply All of Our Needs

Lastly, our eldest son, Elijah, came to visit us for one week from September 19th–26th. He came to see how we are living and to see our mission work inside and outside of Chiang Mai. Elijah came during the raining season, where it rained nearly every day and the front of our rental house was often flooded. There were days where we couldn’t leave our house due to the flood. We also had incidents where we found numerous insects and reptiles (including a snake!) crawling into our house trying to escape the flood.

Our son, Elijah, came to see us in Chiang Mai (September 2013)

Elijah saw that our daily commute was quite a challenge, especially because we went out to visit church members and ran various errands on a daily basis. We frequently used public transportation, which we found difficult and at times unsafe. Whenever we have guests, we would have to borrow an old car from our relatives, but we often feel bad for being bothersome to them. Many times we were invited to visit people and to attend conferences in the outskirt of the city or in other towns. It was a tiring feat traveling via buses with multiple stopovers and changeovers before getting to our faraway destinations.

We spent more than three months praying for a car fund. The Lord finally answered our prayer when our son, Elijah, came to visit us. Elijah and our other children, Peter and Nancy, put their savings and some of our savings together to help with a down payment for a truck. We decided to purchase a truck that costs $28,000 CAD. We have put in a down payment of $14,000 CAD and are financing the rest with 36 monthly payments for three years. The monthly payment is $388 CAD per month. We believed that if we give a portion of what we have to God for His work, He will surely fill the leftover portion. We trust that the Lord will help us find funding for the rest of the car payment. We thanked the Lord for our children’s continued support and in helping us deciding to purchase the much needed vehicle for our ministry.

In almost a year, the Lord has opened many doors for us to do His work throughout Southeast Asia. We see that His work is vast and it is growing. We need strong and faithful people to be a part of our mission team, we need the continued prayers and encouragement from our friends and family, and we also need financial support from those who want to see God’s kingdom expand. There are many of God’s servants who are interested in joining our mission. We ask that our brothers and sisters in Christ continue to pray for our growing mission team and that the Lord will receive all of the glory. We pray that our readers and those involved in the mission receive blessings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
